Sponsored Program Basics

What are Sponsored Programs?

Sponsored programs are research, training/instruction or other scholarly, creative or service activities financed in whole or in part by external entities. Sponsors include federal, state or local governments, corporations and foundations, and other non-profit organizations including academic institutions that flow down funding.

Support for sponsored programs is provided through an agreement between the sponsor and Drake University with common agreement types being grants, cooperative agreements and contracts.  Sponsored awards result from the submission of a grant application or a contract proposal that has been reviewed and authorized by the following:

  • Dean of the respective college/school
  • Director, Sponsored Programs & Grants Management
  • Deputy Provost
  • Associate Vice President of Business & Finance

NOTE: Any request for funding that could result in a grant or contract must be reviewed and approved by Sponsored Programs Administration. This includes formal grant applications, fellowship applications, and online applications and subawards with other universities or agencies.
