Human Resources Concentration
PROGRAM OVERVIEW This concentration focuses on issues surrounding the management of people in organizations. It is available to undergraduate students of any major who have an interest in human resource management and want to prepare for a career in human resources or related fields. The concentration is designed to provide students with the core competencies to be competitive in today's job market. Drake's HR concentration is an interdisciplinary program provided by the College of Business and Public Administration, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Education.
FACULTY University faculty who teach the concentration courses hold doctorate degrees, and bring a blend of business-world experience, academic training and a strong research foundation to the classroom.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION High school students are encouraged to take courses that help them develop written and oral communication skills, and information technology skills.
REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCENTRATION
Program requirements for the HR concentration include the following:
Drake Curriculum Courses - (10-12 credit hrs)
PSY 1 -- Intro. Psychology w/lab - 4 hrs
STAT 71, STAT60, PSY 15 or SOC158 -- Statistics - 3-5 hrs.
ENG 94, ENG 95 or JMC 140 -- Communications - 3 hrs.
Human Resource Coursework (21 credit hrs)
MGMT 182 -- Intro to HR Management - 3 hrs
MGMT 175 -- Employee and Labor Relations - 3 hrs
Human Behavior Processes Choose three of the following:
PSY 30 -- Social Psychology - 3 hrs
PSY 85 -- Organizational Psychology - 3 hrs
PSY 136 -- Prejudice and Discrimination - 3 hrs
MGMT 133 -- Man. Diversity in the Workplace - 3 hrs
ADED 139 -- Leadership - 3 hrs
ECON 115 -- Labor Economics - 3 hrs
Specific Skills Development Choose two of the following:
PSY 182 -- Performance Management - 3 hrs
PSY 183 -- Industrial Psychology - 3 hrs
MGMT -- Compensation & Benefits - 3 hrs
ADED 147 -- Intro to Training & Development - 3 hrs
INTERNSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES Internships in HR are available during the school year and summer months. These opportunities allow students to gain valuable on-the-job experiences and a competitive edge in today's job market. The HR concentration is designed to provide a current and comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for Professional Human Resources certification by the Human Resource Certification Institute.
The Drake Society for Human Resource Management student chapter offers activities and resources for professional development of those students interested in pursuing careers in HR or related fields. It is sponsored by the national SHRM and Central Iowa SHRM chapters.
