Leadership

Drake is committed to preparing students to become confident leaders in the academic world and beyond. Whether it's through organized programs, involvement in student organizations, Greek life or student government, you'll find plenty of opportunity to lead the way.

Leadership Programs

Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute

The Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute connects students through in-class and out-of-class learning experiences with the insights and experiences of alumni, community leaders, faculty and staff.

Components of the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute include:

  • Emerging Leaders Model
  • Adams Academy
  • Fall Leaders Workshop
  • Spring Leadership Conference
  • Multicultural Weekend Retreat
  • Senior Reflections
New Student Transitional Programming

This program is designed to assist new students during their transition to Drake with an emphasis on academic success and personal development.

Peer Mentor/Academic Consultants are current students who personally mentor new students beginning with summer orientation, throughout Welcome Weekend and continuing into the fall semester.

The Peer Advisory Board develops, implements and evaluates program content for Welcome Weekend and beyond. Peers work in collaboration with Resident Assistants for the semester-long mentoring experience.

Residence Life Leaders

Resident Assistants serve as leaders and role models helping students explore their interests and values as they create an inclusive community.

Assistant Residence Hall Coordinators are upper-class students who serve as advisers to Drake residents.

The Residence Hall Association helps facilitate a sense of community and provides programming and leadership opportunities for student involvement and campus events.

Student Activities Board

Members plan educational and social programs, and encourage involvement among students and student organizations throughout the academic year.

Student Organizations

With more than 160 student organizations on campus there are myriad opportunities for involvement and leadership. Don't see what you like? Create your own organization!

Greek Life

Social fraternities and sororities promote values of scholarship, leadership, community service and friendship. The Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council recruit members at various times throughout the year.

Professional fraternities provide networking and career opportunities for students in their preferred field of study or interest.

Student Senate

Elected officers and committees are charged with diverse responsibilities including allocating student funds, publicizing campus activities, improving campus facilities and overseeing campus organizations. The Drake Student Senate has a direct relationship with the Board of Trustees and the Drake administration.

Student Athlete Advisory Committee

Representatives from each athletic program serve on an advisory board to the athletic department and offer the student athlete perspective on various issues.

Recognizing Student Leaders

Each year, Drake recognizes student leadership and achievement at the Leaders and Luminaries ceremony. Students receive awards for outstanding leadership, community service, student employment and extracurricular involvement. The top students in each class are honored as well as the outstanding senior who is given the Oreon E. Scott Award.
