Title: Teaching Artist, Piano

Phone: (515) 271-4011

Judith Veeder, teacher of piano, joined the Drake University Community of Music faculty in 1996. She considers music and other creative arts as important vehicles for self-expression and life enrichment, as reflected in her undergraduate degrees in music, psychology and art, and Master's degree in counseling and creative arts therapy. Specific to her piano teaching, she brings extensive knowledge of and experience in the Taubman approach for preventing tension and injury, having studied for seven years at the Dorothy Taubman Institute of Piano in New York, where she served as a teaching assistant at the summer institutes. As the only teacher in the state with this training and experience, she has been instrumental in helping students and professional musicians overcome physical and musical limitations, and has brought attention to the need for re-evaluating long-held assumptions regarding piano technique. She has given presentations and masterclasses statewide on the use of healthy movement in piano playing. Her teachers/mentors include Kenneth Drake and Chiu-Ling Lin (Drake University); and, John Bloomfield, Edna Golandsky, Nina Scolnik, and Dorothy Taubman (Taubman Institute).
