Basic Musicianship/Aural Skills

Using written, singing, and keyboard applications this class introduces and develops basic written and aural literacy skills. Students with competencies in the fundamentals of music may want to consider the Pre-College Theory/Aural skills class instead.

 

The fall semester introduces and begins development of competencies

  • Reading skills 

    • Fluent pitch reading in the treble and bass clefs

  • Notation Skills

    • Pitch notation using the treble, bass, and grand staves

  • Rhythm and meter

    • Fundamentals of rhythmic notation

    • Notation of rhythms using protonotation

    • Simple and compound meters

    • Rhythmic notation within a dictated metric phrase

    • Rhythmic notation within a dictated melodic phrase

    • Rhythmic performance—clapping and singing

    • Error detection
