In his own words:
“The Drake University Music Department continues to have far-reaching influence over my life and career. As a senior at Carroll High School, I wasn’t sure if music was right for me, or, more accurately, if I was right for music. To further compound the issue, I had no idea which school to attend of the handful for which I had been accepted. The answer presented itself in the form of a phone call one evening in March of 1995. Andrew Classen, Director of Jazz Studies, called me to talk about my potential as a musician at Drake. I was floored – a university professor was calling because he was genuinely interested in my future. Another call followed a few weeks later by Clarence Padilla. There was no doubt in my mind that Drake was the right place for me- a sentiment that continues to strengthen to this day. I am fortunate to count my mentors and fellow students from my days at Drake as respected colleagues and close friends. I have found that the sincerity of interest in my development as a musician, teacher, and human being to be the unifying thread of the Drake experience.”
