Academic Program Review Guidelines
Prepared by the Academic Program Review Steering Committee
Introduction

The following pages provide guidelines for preparation of program evaluation documents to be submitted for the Drake University Academic Program Review and Prioritization process. The Academic Program Review Steering Committee, with representation from every academic division of the University, has attempted to develop guidelines that provide maximum opportunity for each program to present its strengths but which also provides a realistic opportunity for the University to assess its strengths and its needs and to make decisions about academic programming in the future.

This document provides a program definition, lays out the criteria for assessment of programs, and indicates questions to be asked and data to be provided in addressing the various criteria. Every academic program in the University will prepare a review document using thesedefinitions, procedures and criteria. Review documents will be prepared and submitted according to a timeline that will be made available as soon as possible.

General Instructions

Review documents for each identified program must include the six sections specified in the Academic Program Review Criteria and Procedures. For each section, questions to be answered and/or data to be provided are defined. Unless listed as optional, all questions are to be answered and all data provided for each program.

A template with headings and special notations is being provided for your responses submission of reviews. Responses can be typed or pasted into the template. The guidelines and the template documents provide page limits for various parts of the review. The template is set up for one-inch margins, 10 point font and 1-1/2 line spacing. APRSC set these guidelines in response to concern that review information be formatted uniformly and be controlled in length. APRSC does assume however that those who will be reading the documents will not interpret the page guidelines too literally but will expect programs to hold close to the limits.

Program Definition

The following definition of a program will be used for purposes of identifying programs for prioritization and review.

A discrete education activity that uses academic resources. It is separable for purposes of examination and the resources needed to support it are identifiable.

Subsumed by this definition are all majors, minors, concentrations, general education and service programs, certification programs, joint degrees and any other programs which utilize academic resources.

Programs which meet this definition and which are located solely within one college/school will be reviewed and prioritized by the Dean of the program's home college/school in consultation with an appropriate faculty advisory group (or groups).

Programs which cross colleges/schools will be assigned to one unit, the one which devotes the greatest resources to it, for review. However, input should be solicited from all
