Student Responsibilities & Expectations

A student employee should consider the job a serious commitment. When hired for a position, the student becomes a member of a work unit that depends on him or her.

Therefore, the supervisor may reasonably expect the student to:
Complete I-9 and W-4 forms.
Report to work at the agreed-upon time, ready to work.
Attend to assigned duties on the job, and not conduct personal business while at work.
Work with a cooperative and positive attitude.
Notify the supervisor as soon as possible to discuss work schedule changes.  Projects and exams may occasionally interfere with a work schedule; the student should notify the supervisor when such changes can be predicted or occur.
Accurately record the number of hours worked.
Sign the timecard and submit the completed timecard to the supervisor on the last working day of the month.
Give the employer at least two weeks notice if it becomes necessary to leave the job.
Immediately notify employer and Human Resources of any job-related accident.

It is the responsibility of the campus employer to make these and any other expectations or requirements known to student employees.

Multiple Employers

If a student holds more than one on-campus job, the student must inform each supervisor that he or she has more than one position. Knowledge of a student’s other job will enable the employer to monitor more accurately the student’s earnings and prevent employers from having to pay overtime for students who exceed 40 hours in one week.

Attendance

An employee is considered absent when the employee fails to report for and remain at work as scheduled.  An employee is not considered absent, of course, during periods such as vacation, holidays, days off and approved leaves of absence, provided that the supervisor has been informed.  An employee who knows he or she is going to be absent or late has the responsibility to call the department indicating for how long and give a specific reason.  The employee is responsible for properly notifying the department as far in advance of his or her starting time as possible, but no later than his or her scheduled starting time.  Since exam schedules are set by each professor at the beginning of each semester, necessary time off for studying should be scheduled in advance, if possible.
