Drake University’s commitment to excellence in health care education took a significant leap forward as the Iowa Board of Nursing approved the University’s nursing program proposal and curriculum for the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.  In addition, the Higher Learning Commission has granted approval of the program, and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) has determined that the program is eligible to pursue ACEN Candidacy status. These milestone approvals set the stage for the enrollment of students beginning in the fall of 2024, marking a new era of opportunity for aspiring nurses in the heart of Iowa.

The ABSN program at Drake University represents a dynamic and innovative approach to nursing education, designed to meet the increasing demand for highly skilled nurses in today’s healthcare landscape. This accelerated program offers a streamlined pathway for individuals who have completed 70 credit hours and the pre-requisite courses, or hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field to pursue a rewarding career in nursing.

“Our accelerated bachelor of science nursing program adds to our program offerings and furthers our dedication to the provision of high-quality health care education,” said Chuck Phillips, interim dean of the college.  “These approvals reflect our unwavering commitment to providing nursing education that prepares students to excel in their careers and make a meaningful impact in healthcare.”

The ABSN program at Drake University will offer students a comprehensive curriculum that combines rigorous academic coursework with hands-on clinical experiences. Under the guidance of experienced faculty members, students will gain the knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment necessary to deliver patient-centered care across diverse healthcare settings.

“We are dedicated to equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed as compassionate and competent nurses,” says Mary Owens, nursing program director. “Our curriculum is designed to cultivate critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice, empowering graduates to address the complex healthcare needs of individuals, families, and communities.”

With these approvals of the ABSN program and its ACEN candidacy status, Drake University reaffirms its commitment to advancing healthcare education and addressing the growing demand for nurses in Iowa and beyond. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, Drake University remains at the forefront, preparing the next generation of health care leaders that now includes nursing to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
