Drake Alum Receives Fellow Designation from American Society of Health-System Pharmacists    

The ASHP Practioner Recognition Program is intended to recognize excellence in pharmacy practice and grant recognition to promote public awareness of pharmacists who have distinguished themselves in practice.

Criteria for Recognition
In general the criteria for recognition are as follows:

  • Candidate must have demonstrated sustained practice excellence in health-system pharmacy for at least 10 years.
  • Candidate shall have contributed to the total body of knowledge in pharmacy practice.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated ongoing involvement in and committment to educating practitioners.
  • Candidate must support the profession, as through active membership and participation in ASHP.

Fellowship Status
Each person who receives recognition is designated a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FASHP) and is awarded a recognition plaque at a ceremony held during the ASHP Summer Meeting.


This year one of thirty people designated as a fellow include Drake University Alum Geoffrey C. Lawton.  Below is a brief description of Lawton's professional involvement and recognitions.

Geoffrey C. Lawton (Drake PH'91)

Littleton & Parker Adventist Hospital, Denver Colorado

Education: B.S. in Pharmacy, Drake University 1991; M.B.A., University of Colorado, 1999; PharmD degree candidate, University of Kansas.

Current Position: Vice President of Business Development for Littleton & Parker Adventist Hospital

Practice Achievements: Mr. Lawton has worked to improve the safety of hospital medication use by successfully implementing bar-coded medication verification systems in multiple hospitals.  Mr. Lawton helped establish a clinical pharmacy specialty practice in emergency medicine at the Medical Center of Aurora that won the ASHP Best Practice Award in Health System Pharmacy in 2003.  Mr. Lawton helped found an ASHP-accredited residency in pharmacy practice at the medical center of Aurora.  He has been actively involved with the Colorado Pharmacists society, twice serving as a board member and serving as the membership chair in 1998.  Mr. Lawton has also served as the chairman of the Academy of Health-System Pharmacists for the Colorado Pharmacists Society and has worked to establish the state society's ASHP Affliation.  He is a member of the ASHP section of Pharmacy Practice Managers and is a reviewer for the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.  Mr. Lawton was recognized as the Distinguished Young Pharmacist in the state of Colorado in 1997, received the Colorado Pharmacists Society President's Award for Leadership in 1998, received the Greg Semerdjian, M.D., Innovation Award from Catholic Health Initiatives National Pharmacy Program in 2005 and was recognized as Pharmacist of the Year in the state of Colorado in 2006.
