Hartig, P3 and Tischer, P2 receive NACDS Scholarships

| Two Drake students have received $2,000 scholarships from NACDS. Charlie Hartig and Sarah Tischer, both in their second year of Drake's Doctor of Pharmacy program, are two of 60 students nationwide awarded the NACDS scholarships. "Both of these students are very deserving of this honor due to their dedication to the college and the pharmacy profession," said Renae Chesnut, associate professor of pharmacy practice and associate dean for academic and student affairs. Hartig, a resident of Dubuque, Iowa, who is pursuing a law degree along with his pharmacy degree, has a distinguished record of service to the college and leadership of other students, not only in the college but also for the university as a whole, Chesnut added. He was selected to be on the Dean's Student Advisory Council for several years and has served as a college senator for two years. Hartig is also active in Kappa Psi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, and he chairs the college's Honor Code Committee. Tischer, from Chanhassen, Minn., is the current co-chair of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists chapter at Drake. "Sarah is an emerging leader in the college and this award recognizes her potential," Chesnut added. In addition, she is involved with the newly developed Student Leadership Series Program, which is funded by a gift from Wal-Mart and was recently selected to participate in the 2008 Bill Burke Student Leadership Conference, sponsored by the Iowa Pharmacy Association, Drake University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Students who compete nationally for the scholarships are enrolled as full-time pharmacy students, and are required to have experience in a chain community pharmacy and an interest in pursing a career in community pharmacy. The awards are given as part of the foundation's Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program. The program aims to recognize students interested in pursuing a career in chain community pharmacy and support future leaders in community pharmacy practice.
