NACDS Foundation awards $20,000 to Drake's College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences
January 4, 2008
The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation has awarded Drake University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences a $20,000 grant to provide students with internships at community pharmacies and to help fund projects that seek to address, identify and develop ways to promote the practice of community pharmacy and improve patient care.
Drake is one of four institutions to receive funding from NACDS to help fund projects to promote community pharmacy practice and improve patient care. The "Internship Program Partnering Pharmacy Student with Chain Pharmacy Entrepreneurs" will partner pharmacy students with chain pharmacy entrepreneurs dedicated to developing future pharmacy leaders, new practice models or engaging in innovation. The goal of this internship program is to help future practitioners initiate change within the profession and formulate strategic plans for their practices, ultimately, advancing the profession through better patient care.
The two-year grant, beginning in 2009, will provide four students each year with a paid 10-week summer internship working 40 hours per week at a NACDS chain member. Students will also participate in "Shaping Your Pharmacy Future" certificate program through the DELTA Rx Institute and online discussions, conference calls and student presentations as well as supplemental coursework. ." The investigators are:
o Principal Investigator: Renae Chesnut, RPh, MBA, EdD, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice
o Charles Phillips, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice
o Denise Soltis, RPh, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice
o Raylene Rospond. PharmD, BCPS, Dean
The NACDS grant program was first launched in 2007 by the Foundation to partner with pharmacy schools and related organizations to develop projects that advance community pharmacy practice and positively impact patient care. Fourteen letters of inquiry were submitted in the second funding cycle of 2007.
"These programs are a positive investment for the future of pharmacy care. Without the generosity of donors, we would not be able to provide aid to schools and institutions working to advance the role of community pharmacies in patient care," remarked Phil Schneider, NACDS Foundation President. "The Foundation is proud to support these initiatives, and we encourage more schools and pharmacy-related organizations to apply to our programs in the future."
