Wilder, Drake Pharmacy Alum (PH '51) Passes

Bernard F. "Barney" Wilder, 87 and a Drake College of Pharmacy Alum (PH '51) passed away Sunday August 12, 2007. 

Barney was born December 26, 1919 in White River, South Dakota, the son of James E. and Mary (Coyle) Wilder. He is a WWII veteran, serving in the US Navy from 1941 to 1946.

Upon discharge he attended Drake University and earned his degree in Pharmacy in 1951. On June 25, 1951 he married Norma L. Jennings of Des Moines.

He co-owned Urbandale Pharmacy from 1956 through 1979. Barney was a prominant fixture in the Urbandale community. Most noteable, he was a founding member of the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce and past-president of the Urbandale Lions Club. He was honored as Urbandale's Citizen of the Year.

Additionally, he was past-president of the Polk County Pharmacists Association and was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia for "outstanding community service in pharmacy." Barney was an active member of St. Pius X Church and the Holy Name Society.

In retirement Barney was able to devote more time to gardening and family, he was the "best Grandpa". He continued to share his time with the community as interpretor at the 1870's Drug Store at the Living History Farms.

He is survived by the family he loved: wife Norma; three children Robert J. Wilder of Brewster, MA., Bernard D. (Mary) Wilder of Davenport and Carol A. Wilder of Oak Harbor, WA.; four grandchildren Emily, Keriann, Allyson and Rebecca; two brothers John and William and one sister Theresa.
