The American Pharmacist's Association (APhA) recently honored Drake University with one of ten $2,000 awards for delivering comprehensive pharmacy services as part of a community outreach program.
Project CHANCE -- Chapter Helping Advocate for Needy Communities Everywhere -- encourages student pharmacists to reach out and provide patient care to their communities, particularly communities in need.
The winners were announced at the 2009 APhA Annual Meeting, held in San Antonio April 3-6.
Lisa Koselke, a third-year student from Cary, Ill., and Krystal Byerly, a second-year student from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, chaired the Drake chapter's project, which will implement a program at Community Access Pharmacy in Des Moines for the 2009-2010 school year.
The students will work with Sally Haack, Drake assistant professor of pharmacy practice, who maintains an ambulatory care practice at the site to help patients afflicted with asthma to better understand the disease and optimize treatment.
As a winning chapter, Drake also will present a poster with the results of the project at the 2010 APhA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. next spring.
