Drake Pharmacy Students Compete in Entrepreneur Competition

Drake students recently participated in Drake's Next Top Entrepreneur Competition that challenges student to show their creativity and innovation. The event was part of Entrepreneurship Week USA and was hosted by Drake's DELTA Rx Institute.

The competition was split into three rounds, held on campus Feb. 20, 22 and 27, with top performers advancing to the next round. Three judges representing the pharmacy, business and a health care sectors judged each round in the following format:

• First round: a three-minute presentation of a health care idea,
• Second round: a three-minute presentation of an impromptu solution to a health care problem, and the
• Third round: a 15-minute presentation of a business plan for a new health care endeavor.

"This annual event provides an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity, innovation, problem-solving and presentation skills as they share their ideas to solve health care-related problems," said Renae Chesnut, associate dean for academic and student affairs and a member of the DELTA Rx Institute team.

"This competition may spur the development of future products and/or services that can benefit patients, health care providers and society at large," she added.

The top three winners won cash prizes of $1500, $1000 and $500, respectively. Charles Hartig (P4), Derek Lomas (P4) and Kejal Patel (P4) won first place.

The team's idea was a company that would seamlessly transition patients from hospital to home. “Out-Patience” will have pharmacists that review hospital charts, screen medication for any issue, discharge counsel the patient, follow-up with the patient, and send a report to any necessary care giver.

The second place team of  Jordan Nelson (P4) and Lance Logan (P4), presented The Clinical Pharmacist Consultants of America (CPCA).

CPCA is a clinical pharmacy consulting company that provides health care facilities with 24/7 access to all the services of a full-time clinical pharmacist for a fraction of the cost of staffing one on-site. The CPCA uses existing technology (such as Pyxis Connect and PDF scanners) to send patient sensitive information from the hospital to the CPCA pharmacist. This technology allows one off-site clinical pharmacist to service multiple facilities.

Elizabeth Litman, a senior BCMB major, took third place with "The Private Practice Network," a free service to private practice doctors, dentists, pharmacists and any other medical profession that can be done in a private practice setting.

“The idea came to me when trying to figure out what a new doctor would do to make connections and accurate referrals when just starting a practice in a new area, or how medical professionals would be able to take time off or extended leave, say for maternity or paternity leave,” said Litman.

The network is designed as a free service where doctors can sign in with their information and proactively contact other medical staff in the area to find out if they trust them for an accurate referral.

The competition was supported by funding from Wal-Mart and the National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Association.
