D-PREP Discover Drake, Prepare, Research and Explore Pharmacy  Unleash Your Potential! Program Overview Discover Drake, Explore Pharmacy is a 3-Year program that introduces students to the profession of pharmacy and other health care professions through hands-on laboratory experiences, interactive discussions with a pharmacy student mentor, and educational sessions. Students participate in a one-day summer camp and two sessions during the academic school year during his or her 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years.The emphasis of the program is to gain exposure and familiarize students with the numerous healthcare opportunities and to provide insight into the necessary curriculum and extracurricular activities they should take on while in high school.
Program Goals -
Students will learn about pharmacy and other health care career fields -
Students will be knowledgeable in determining academic coursework and extracurricular activities for college preparation -
Students will understand the importance of practical lab experiences and the necessity of developing such skills -
Students will investigate the pharmacist’s role and gain a better understanding of patient-pharmacist relationships through discussion and communication skill building exercises
D-PREP Curriculum Year A - Tour the pharmacy and health sciences facilities and academic buildings - Discuss the pharmacy education curriculum, experiential opportunities, and leadership topics with a pharmacy student mentor - Participate in a pharmacy practice lab experience Year B - Complete and discuss the Career Pathway Evaluation for Pharmacy Professionals with the professional pharmacy student mentor - Attend a one-hour pharmacy shadowing experience with the professional pharmacy student mentor and debrief about findings - Discover how to make the most of the high school academic curriculum and set personal goals and challenges
Year C - Conduct research on a healthcare topic of interest with the professional pharmacy student mentor - Create a healthcare education brochure based upon the healthcare research found prior - Present the completed brochure and research findings at a mini-health fair at Drake University alongside other students NOTE: The curriculum sequence may differ for each group of students. Completion of this program does not guarantee admission to Drake University.
Program Admission Criteria -
Must be a sophomore (10th grade) student during the 2011-2012 academic year -
Minimum of a 3.25 GPA -
Interested in a career in math and sciences -
Maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA over the course of the program
