Immunizations Training 2007

September 20-21, 2007

The Iowa Pharmacy Association and the Collaborative Education Institute will sponsor an immunization training for pharmacists this fall. A self-study packet must be completed prior to participating in the live workshop. Information regarding the specifics of this program, including location and cost, will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Program Objectives:

Self-Study: At the conclusion of this self-study, participants should be able to:

1. Utilize the CDC’s recommended childhood, adolescent and adult immunization schedules.
2. Understand basic immunology, including active immunity, passive immunity, antigens, immune response, antibodies, and cell-mediated immunity.
3. Understand principles and classification of vaccines, including live attenuated, inactivated, polysaccharides, and recombinant.
4. Discuss the latest recommendations on immunization made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
5. Evaluate strategies for healthcare practices and providers focused on increasing immunization levels.
6. Discuss the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendations on Quality Standards and Guidance for Program Evaluation in Nontraditional Settings and Use of the Standing Orders Programs to Increase Adult Vaccination Rates.
7. Discuss the importance of vaccine safety.
8. Report an adverse event utilizing the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
9. Understand the role of the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.
10. Use Vaccine Information Statements as a required element of patient/parent/guardian education.

Live Workshop: At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Understand the principles, scheduling, precautions, and contraindications for vaccination.
2. Describe the epidemiology of vaccine preventable disease.
3. Describe vaccines in development and indications for vaccination.
4. Develop a screening technique to identify patients needing immunization.
5. Understand protocol development with a physician in compliance with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy’s rules, including record keeping, emergency procedures, and reporting requirements.
6. Discuss the Iowa Board of Pharmacy’s rules regarding administration of influenza and pneumococcal vaccine to adult patients via protocol.
7. Evaluate vaccine information sources available and methods to access them.
8. Discuss safety measurers to implement in the pharmacy delivering immunization services, including blood-borne pathogen directives and needlestick injury prevention.
9. Develop emergency response procedures.
10. Describe methods for reimbursement for immunization services, including roster billing through Medicare.
11. Describe ways to increase immunization rates, particularly for at-risk populations.
12. Understand the storage and handling requirements of vaccines.
13. Discuss the practical patient cases in regard to immunization recommendations.
14. Demonstrate techniques for administering vaccines to adults, including intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intranasal.
