BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers a student leadership development program for pharmacy program student leaders to improve upon their leadership skills. The Student Leadership Development Series was rolled out in the fall of 2006 to the College’s most visible student leaders – the presidents of the College’s professional fraternities, College councils and committees, pharmacy association student chapters, and honorary societies.
Throughout the 2006-07 academic year, student leaders developed their own leadership styles through student/leader discussions and self-reflection among their peers. In addition, students created their own leadership journals to document their ideas and leadership goals. At the suggestion of the student leaders and with the support of Wal-Mart, this series was expanded in 2007-08 to include guest speakers, additional meetings and group discussions, more time for self-reflection, and research on specific leadership topics,
The program goals for the series include:
- Provide student leaders with the opportunity to discuss the obstacles they face as leaders, share ideas, solve problems, and network in a collaborative, supportive environment.
- Help students master the art of building relationships
- Build the capacity of student leaders to serve as mentors to the members of their individual organizations and be better equipped to develop their employees in the future.
- Through practice exercises offered through the curriculum, create experiences for students to achieve a desired outcome – practice that will better prepare students for the workplace.
- Provide opportunities for student leaders to reflect on their personal leadership styles, discover their hidden potential, and determine how they distinguish themselves as a leader.
THE CO-CURRICULUM SCHEDULE
Each session consists of a large group session that is open to the entire College student body centered on a leadership topic. The second hour consists of the student leaders engaging in self-reflection and discovery on the chosen topic. Students earn points throughout the series through various ways. The students who earn the most points could request funding to further enhance and grow their leadership skills by attending a conference or meeting related to leadership skills.
