Fraternities Strengthen Security
Des Moines, Iowa (Feb. 19, 1997)-- With recent security problems on campus and 34th Street, students are curious how safe it is to live within the Drake community.
Some Greek fraternities have had items stolen from their houses. "Within the last year, we've had a member's bass guitar and the house speaker system stolen," Sam Riback (J2) said.
Riback is a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha house. "With the house not full [of members living in], it is really hard to make ends meet while replacing stolen items," he said
From the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, "a microwave, the house speakers and TV, a mountain bike, and a BBQ grill have all been stolen," Allen Goldner (J4), SAE president, said. "We've even caught people inside our house carrying things to their car." Last semester a member of the house was coming home and found three men loading their car with items from their basement
The Theta Chi house has not had as many problems, but "we've had a lot of compact discs stolen," Tom Randall (FA2), a member of the house, said. "We probably don't have as much of a problem as other houses because we are located on the corner of Forest and 34th."
All of the people interviewed said their houses are being more cautious. Combination locks are being used more and doors, are locked all of the time.
