Bulldog Cheer Squad Encourages New Members
Des Moines, Iowa (March 1, 1997)--
If you've had an interest in cheerleading for Drake University, Heather Koyama (BN3) said, "Cheerleading at Drake is a worthwhile activity. You make friends and gain great experiences." This is Koyama's second year on the squad.
Koyama said the teachers are very understanding about cheerleading, and Drake does a lot to help with academics.
"I get all me school books free, and they provide me with tutors. The professors excuse me from classes during games," Koyama said.
Jill Quillin (ED3) is also in her second year of cheering. Quillin said, "The professors are really supportive. They go to all the games and work with me on making up tests."
Despite their good experiences, Quillin and Koyama are not cheering next year.
Quillin said, "I'll need to concentrate on student teaching next year. Cheering at Drake has been so much fun but I need to start focusing on the real world."
Koyama said, "Cheering for Drake has been an incredible experience, but I have other concerns. I have a part-time job, and I'm graduating in a year."
If you're thinking about trying out, both women offered some excellent advice and they encourage you to go for it.
Koyama said, "Balance your time. If you work, make sure you have a carefully planned out schedule. Get your homework in on the due date, and you'll be fine."
Quillin said, "Go for it but make sure you learn how to manage your time!"
