Course Overview
Thorough classroom research by Drs. Short and Echevarria demonstrated their were specific steps teachers could take to help their ESL students acquire not only the English language, but the language of the content area. They also learned that teachers working collaboratively to reflect on and analyze their teaching were often able to improve achievement. Because many of the features of the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Model are not limited to ELL students, but exemplify good teaching for all students in all content areas, this course introduces teachers to the concept of sheltered instruction in general, to the SIOP Model in particular, and how the framework can be used in classroom instruction for ELLs and students of all capabilities.
