English as a Second Language

In order to serve Drake's commitment to international education, the Office of International Programs and Services began offering an English as a Second Language program in 1983. Offerings now include the Intensive English Program (IEP) and the Summer Institute for Language and Culture (SILC).

The IEP is an academic support service designed to help international students enhance their academic success by improving their English language proficiency and increasing their familiarity with US culture. Small classes and individual attention characterize Drake's IEP, where intermediate and advanced level courses are offered year-round.

Upon request, specially designed programs for small groups may also be developed by Drake's English as a Second Language office.  For example, the Summer Institute of Language and Culture has offered one-month program incorporating language study and related field trips for groups of 10 - 15 international visitors.  Programs focusing on the vocabulary and English usage related to particular types of employment have also been offered.

For more information contact Dr. Thomas E. Grouling in the International Center at tom.grouling@drake.edu, or call 1-515-271-2084.

Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 - Noon and 1:00 - 4:30 pm.
