Registration and Application for Current Drake Students

 

Current Drake Students who are interested in beginning language study in World Languages and Cultures should first fill out the World Languages and Cultures application.  This application will give us information about the students, their history of language study, and contact information.  The deadline for fall semester registration is mid-March and the deadline for spring semester registration is mid-October. 

Because our classes are small (five or fewer students), they fill up quickly, and registration is done on a first come, first serve basis with some priority given to students with a requirement to study language (International Relations, International Business, Vocal Performance, and French, Spanish, German Secondary Education teaching endorsements).  Therefore, it is recommended that you apply early to have the best opportunity to get a space in the class. 

 

Registration Process

 

1) Complete the online application before the deadline (mid-March or mid-October).

2) After submitting your application, you will immediately receive an automated response to the email address you provide.

3) Students with no previous experience in the language will be contacted by the program assistant regarding registration in the course.  Students with previous experience in the language they wish to study must complete a placement exam. Placement exams are conducted differently for different languages. The program assistant will provide you with instructions for completing the appropriate placement exam.

4) After completion of the placement exam, students are enrolled in the appropriate course in World Languages and Cultures, as space is available. Students are enrolled in the order in which their placement exams are received. Priority is given to students whose declared major requires language study.

5) Each language section is limited to a maximum of five students. Because demand for a course can exceed capacity, at times students cannot be registered for the course into which they place. If the course into which students place is full, we will inform them the next time the course is offered.
