Registration and Application for Entering First-Year Students
High school seniors who will be entering Drake in the fall and are interested in beginning language study in World Languages and Cultures in their first semester should fill out the application as soon as possible. This application will give us information about the students, their history of language study, and contact information. The deadline for this application for fall semester language study is mid-May, but we recommended students complete it as soon as they are certain they will be attending Drake.
Because our classes are small (five or fewer students), they fill up quickly, and registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis with some priority given to students with a requirement to study language (International Relations, International Business, Vocal Performance, and French, Spanish, German Secondary Education teaching endorsements). Therefore, it is recommended that you apply early to have the best opportunity to get a space in the class.
Students interested in studying a language during their first semester at Drake should follow the instructions below as soon as possible prior to their arrival at Drake. Timely completion of this process is important, as courses fill quickly.
Students who do not plan to begin language study in their first semester do not need to apply to the program or take a placement exam prior to their arrival at Drake. They should follow the directions under "Current Drake Students" the semester prior to which they desire to study a language.
Registration Process
1) Complete the online application before the mid-May deadline
2) After submitting your application, you will immediately receive an automated response to the email address you provide.
3) Students with no previous experience in the language will be contacted by the program assistant regarding registration in the course. Students with previous experience in the language they wish to study must complete a placement exam. Placement exams are conducted differently for different languages. The program assistant will provide you with instructions for completing the appropriate placement exam.
4) After completion of the placement exam, students are enrolled in the appropriate course in World Languages and Cultures, as space is available. Students are enrolled in the order in which their placement exams are received. Priority is given to students whose declared major requires language study.
5) Each language section is limited to a maximum of five students. Because demand for a course can exceed capacity, at times students cannot be registered for the course into which they place. If the course into which students place is full, we will inform them the next time the course is offered.
