Registration and Application for Non-Drake Students
Whether you are a professional working a full-time job desiring language skills, a student at a different university, or a high school student desiring to enter as a PSEO student, there is a slightly different procedure for enrolling in Drake classes in each situation. We do our best to help students in each situation. It is important for students in these situations to know that our classes are offered exclusively during the day between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Students in their first semester of language study enroll in six credit hours, and come to campus for 50 minutes, five times a week for class.
Those who are interested in beginning language study in World Languages and Cultures should first fill out the application. This application will give us information about the student, their history of language study, and contact information. The deadline for fall semester registration is mid-March and the deadline for spring semester registration is mid-October.
Because our classes are small (five or fewer students), they fill up quickly, and registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis with some priority given to Drake students with a requirement to study language (International Relations, International Business, Vocal Performance, and French, Spanish, German Secondary Education teaching endorsements). Therefore, it is recommended that you apply early to have the best opportunity to get a space in the class.
Registration Process
1) Complete the online application before the deadline (mid-March or mid-October).
2) After submitting your application, you will immediately receive an automated response to the email address you provide.
3) Students with no previous experience in the language will be contacted by the program assistant regarding registration in the course. Students with previous experience in the language they wish to study must complete a placement exam. Placement exams are conducted differently for different languages. The program assistant will provide you with instructions for completing the appropriate placement exam.
4) After completion of the placement exam, students are informed of their placement.
5.) Depending on the students' situation (cross-enrollment, non-degree seeking part-time students, PSEO), the program assistant will assist the students in the appropriate channels to go through in the actual enrollment process.
5) Each language section is limited to a maximum of five students. Because demand for a course can exceed capacity, at times students cannot be registered for the course into which they place. If the course into which students place is full, we will inform them the next time the course is offered.
