iTunesU is a customized version of Apple iTunes that allows you to access university-generated podcasts in a centralized, secure location. Podcasts on iTunesU are available for download or playback 24 hours a day and can include lectures, presentations, exam reviews and more.
iTunesU is a free service for colleges and universities to make their content available quickly and easily to a broad range of students, faculty, staff, alumni and others through the iTunes Music Store and Drake University’s iTunesU site.
Faculty who use multimedia in their courses may be interested in using DUiT to provide content materials to their students.

No. For specific requirements concerning hardware and software, click here.
Back to Top - What are the required formats for publishing my podcast on DUiT?
iTunes U only accepts files for upload that are less than 500 megabytes (MB). Audio files must be either AAC or MP3 with appropriate file extensions (.m4a, .mp3). To use specific cover artwork with an audio track, use the AAC file type format (.m4a). Video files must be MPEG-4 with H.264 compression with appropriate file extensions (.mp4, .m4v, .mov). If you are using QuickTime to create and edit video content, export your videos by choosing Movie to iPod from the Export pop-up menu in QuickTime Pro.
Back to Top - I don't want to publish my own podcast, I just want to listen to podcasts published by others at Drake U. How do I do that?
Just log into blueVIEW with your Drake ID and password, navigate to the Campus Life tab and click on the Drake University iTUNES U link within the channel.
Back to Top - Do I need an iPod to use iTunesU? / Do I need a Mac to use iTunesU?
You do not need an iPod (or even a Mac!) to use DUiT, though both are supported. While iTunesU is based on Apple's iTunes media player, the software is freely available for both Mac and Windows computers. You can listen to and watch downloaded content from iTunesU right on your computer in iTunes. You can even copy supported media files manually to MP3 players and other media devices not made by Apple for mobile learning - no iPod required.
Back to Top - Where can I get assistance with creating and publishing my podcast on DUiT?
Students and staff who would like additional assistance in creating and publishing their podcasts can contact Peggy Steinbronn by phone (x4510) or e-mail.
Faculty have two options. If you would like your content in a secured environment, then you can use the DUiT site. If you wish to have your content open to the "public", then use the DTC streaming server. Faculty who would like technical assistance, and who want to add their podcast using the DTC streaming server, can contact James McNab by phone (x2842) or e-mail. Faculty who want information about how to use podcasting in their teaching should contact Peggy Steinbronn by phone (x4510) or e-mail.
Back to Top - I have an assignment that needs to be a podcast. What do I do?
Request an account by filling out and submitting the Student Podcast Request Form. An account will be created for you and once you have your podcast file created, you can publish to the DUiT (Drake University iTunesU) site. Check with your instructor to see if this is where you are to load your assignment.
If you need technical assistance with creating the podcast for the assignment, contact Peggy Steinbronn by phone (x4510) or e-mail. Resources are available to all students, faculty, and staff in the Multimedia Development Studio which is located in the lower level of Carnegie.
Back to Top - Can I upload video or audio examples from copyrighted or commercially licensed works to DUiT?
In short, NO. It is absolutely crucial that the content uploaded is allowed to be legally distributed. If you would like to include copyrighted or commercially licensed work on your DUiT site, consult with the Fair Use Guidelines to determine what amount of material is acceptable to post. If possible, and get in touch with the copyright holder to request permission to use the work.
As always, when in doubt, assume the materials you are considering are not "okay" to put online and do your homework to find out where the materials have come from and what the rights are.
Back to Top - I've created my content and added an icon as album art - now how do I get it on to DUiT?
If you need assistance with getting your content on the DUiT site, please contact Peggy Steinbronn (x4510) to discuss what materials you have and create a strategy for the delivery of this content.
Back to Top - Can I edit my meta-data once my file has been uploaded into iTunesU?
Once your file has been uploaded into iTunesU you can NOT edit your meta-data. You must edit your meta-data before you upload your file.
