The Adams Academy offers upperclass students (sophomores, juniors, seniors, P1s, P2s, P3s) the opportunity to discuss and reflect on leadership issues related to theory, effective communication skills, ethical decision making, and importance of inclusivity in organizations.  Additional sessions offer practical skills in leading both at Drake and in the future.  Community service is required so students understand that to be a leader means to serve others.Learning OutcomesAs a result of completing the Adams Academy, students will be able to:
  1. Comprehend definitions of leadership and leadership theory
  2. Understand the importance of living and leading with integrity
  3. Engage in strategies to promote inter-cultural communication and conflict resolution
  4. Model engaged citizenship through service to the larger community
The sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays at 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm and Tuesdays at 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm. In order to for students to better know one another, Academy participants will be asked to select one day of the week to attend the sessions.To graduate with the 2011-2012 class the ten sessions and the community service project must be completed by Friday, March 16, 2012. The Adams Academy graduates will be honored on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Leaders and Luminaries Student Leadership Awards Ceremony.Students will complete the requirements for graduation during the 2011-2012 academic year. Students continuing from 2010-2011 must meet the new requirements. Sessions attended last year will apply toward graduation.The Adams Academy is a leadership development program presented by the Drake University Office of Student Life. Dr. Sentwali Bakari, Dean of Students, and Jan Wise, Director of Student Leadership Programs, coordinate the Academy.
