AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT DRAKE MONDAY IN OBSERVANCE OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE
Rickie Solinger,
author and historian of reproductive rights and welfare policy in the United States,
will give a lecture at Drake University on Monday, Feb. 24, in commemoration of
the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade.
The lecture, titled "Pregnancy and Power: Women's Struggle Over Time,"
will start at 8 p.m. in Bulldog Theater at Olmsted Center, 29th Street and University
Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.
Solinger's books include "Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race
before Roe v. Wade," "The Abortionist: A Woman Against the Law"
and "Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion
and Welfare in the United States."
With artist Kay Obering, Solinger is the curator of a photography exhibition now
on display at Drake in the Weeks Gallery in the lobby of the Harmon Fine Arts
Center, 25th Street and Carpenter Avenue. The show incorporates 60 images by distinguished
photographers. It aims to reclaim dignity and legitimate motherhood for mothers
denied that status by public opinion, public policy and the media. A reception
with Solinger will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the Weeks Gallery.
The exhibition will continue through Friday, Feb. 28.
For more information, contact Nancy Reincke at (515) 271-2161 or nancy.reincke@drake.edu.
The lecture and exhibition are co-sponsored by the Drake Center for the Humanities
and the Drake Women's Studies Program.
