DRAKE TO HOLD MUSIC CLASSES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
This fall the Drake University Community School of Music will sponsor the Musik
Garden program, a series of music classes for parents and children from birth to
age 5.
The program, which begins Friday, Sept. 20, increases children's curiosity about
music, establishes a foundation for singing and musical thought, enhances listening
skills and musical aptitude and helps parents build a strong musical bond with their
children.
The classes will be held on Friday afternoons at Drake's Harmon Fine Arts Center,
25th Street and Carpenter Avenue.
"Family Music for Babies," a class for children from birth to 18 months,
allows parents to play musically with their children through bouncing and rocking
songs, games, dancing and singing. The class meets from 12:30 to 1 p.m.
"Family Music for Toddlers," a class for children ages 18 months to 3 years,
bridges the natural connection between music and movement while teaching children
to sing, dance and play musical instruments. This class meets from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.
"Cycle of Seasons," a class for children ages 3 to 5, celebrates nature
and growing independence through activities that focus on the seasons. Children play
games and explore musical instruments, creative movement and storytelling. The class
meets from 2 to 2:45 p.m.
A parent orientation for all three classes will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17,
in room 204 of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. Tuition and registration fees vary. For
more information, call (515) 271-4011.
