Drake University

A Note
from Dean Salina Shrofel

Welcome to the second edition of The Educator, the biannual newsletter published to inform our alumni, friends and partners about the Drake University School of Education.

In this edition, we feature a current student, a distinguished alumnus and an accomplished faculty member; introduce you to new tenure-track and visiting faculty; and update you on SOE activities, events and alumni news. The six months since the mailing of our first edition have been busy and eventful.

As we strive to be more integrally involved in the educational challenges facing the Iowa community in general and school districts in particular, we are changing. First and foremost, our focus has become centered on students and learners and more school-/community-based. For example, the urban education program has taken another step with the hiring of Dr. Eric Johnson and the establishment of its first professional development school (PDS). Discussions that will lead to the creation of a second PDS are underway.

To be more responsive to the needs of the professional education community, we have revised a number of programs, most notably the special education and the master of science in effective teaching programs. The effective teaching program now allows students to specialize in reading, elementary teaching, and curriculum and instruction. We are working to add specializations in coaching, educational technology, English as a second language, science and mathematics education.

For the past few years, Drake and the School of Education have been offering undergraduate Web-based courses during the summer. The School of Education has spent this year positioning itself to become more aggressive in the area of online education.

In our commitment to preparing graduates who have the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in the global economy, we have begun to expand the scope of our programs. We have formed a partnership with the graduate school at KUSTEM (Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia), located in Kuala Terengganu, which will provide exchange opportunities for graduate students and faculty. During a visit to China and Malaysia, I had the opportunity to begin relationships with other institutions that will eventually provide international experiences for our students, graduates and faculty. As well, two study abroad trips are planned for the coming spring and summer.

In everything we do, we strive to maintain and build the School of Education's reputation for excellence and leadership. Our graduates distinguish themselves in their chosen fields; faculty continue their excellence in teaching, scholarship and service; and we continue to attract highly qualified new faculty and high-achieving students as evidenced in this edition.

Everyone who receives this newsletter is an important part of the School of Education community, and we want to maintain our connection with you. If you haven't yet filled out the information form online at www.drakealumni.net, please do so. I hope, too, that you will find a way to support the work of the School of Education.
