Faculty News Randy Blum joins the SJMC as an assistant professor. Blum is a marketing professional who was the SJMC professional in residence for the spring semester. Blum's marketing background includes positions as senior vice president and corporate marketing director for GuideOne Insurance, and senior vice president and regional marketing director at Wells Fargo Bank. Blum holds a master's degree in divinity/counseling from the University of Notre Dame, and a B.A. in education from the University of Northern Iowa. An article by Lee Jolliffe, associate professor of magazines, was accepted by Journalism History for its summer 2000 issue. "Singing and Selling Seeds: The Live Music Era on Rural Midwestern Radio Stations" is co-authored by J. Steven Smethers of Oklahoma State and features interviews with musicians from Iowa's KMA and KFNF, among others. Todd Evans, associate professor of electronic media, and David Wright , GR'89, associate professor of electronic media, were invited panelists at the 2001 Broadcast Education Association. Their presentation dealt with the value contemporary single-camera production exercises in the digital age. John Lytle, professor of journalism and mass communication, presented the results of his annual statewide broadcast news salary survey at the meeting of the Iowa Broadcast News Association on April 28. Lytle is also helping the Iowa Broadcasters Association select high school graduates for $3,000 renewable college scholarships. He produced the Iowa AP Broadcast award winners tape for that group 's annual meeting and is drafting the construction permit for a Drake low power FM station, due at the FCC June 11. Patricia Prijatel, GR'79, the E.T. Meredith Distinguished Professor of Journalism, is one of six journalism professors nationally to be selected as screeners for the National Magazine Awards. This is Prijatel's fourth year with the awards, sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and held in New York City. They are the premier awards for American magazines. While she was in New York, Prijatel also gave a seminar to magazine editors on "How to pack 5,000 bits of information into a 500-word article." The seminar was sponsored by the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA). She also presented a workshop on "Writing short, writing sassy" for the College Media Advisers. Kathleen Richardson, JO'76, joins the SJMC faculty to teach in the News/Internet program in the fall semester, 2001. Richardson brings 20 years of newspaper experience as a writer and editor to the position. She serves as the Executive Secretary of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council. Richardson holds and a bachelor's degree in news-editorial journalism from the SJMC and a master's degree in mass communication. She will complete her juris doctorate degree at Drake in 2002. Birgit Wassmuth, professor of advertising, presented a research paper at the first annual Visual Communication Research conference in Hamburg, Germany, on Nov. 24. Titled "Are visual cues translatable? A cross-cultural analysis of German and American online newspaper design," this study was co-authored with Dr. David Thompson of Loras College. Wassmuth and Thompson also had an article published in the winter 2001 issue of the Disability Studies Quarterly, "Accessibility of Online Advertising: A content analysis of alternative text for banner images in online newspapers." Wassmuth gave a presentation on "Teaching in a Virtual Classroom" at the first Technology Enhanced Teaching at Loras (TELL) conference held at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, on Feb. 2. She described the challenges and experiences of teaching Web courses at Drake. David Wright, GR'89, associate professor of journalism and mass communication, has been appointed interim associate dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Wright succeeds Professor Henry Milam, who, says Milam, "...will leave Drake at the end of the summer." |
