"It is so easy for many in this country to sit back and read the entertainment
page every day, ignoring the information that will affect their day-to-day lives.
Yet, there are countries full of people, with half the resources, that know more
about U.S. foreign policy than most Americans. This is what motivated me to be a

Kathleen Richardson,

Title: Assistant professor of journalism and mass communication
Background: Richardson worked as an editor and writer at the Des Moines Register
for 20 years, then in 1998 returned to school full-time. Richardson has been teaching
full-time since the fall of 2001.
Various Classes Taught: News reporting and writing classes, reporting and
writing for the Web, and the communications law and ethics class.
Professional Associations: Executive secretary of the Iowa Freedom of Information
Council (IFIOC).
Research Interests: Freedom of information issues and journalism ethics.
Off-the-Job Interests: Family, friends, church, reading and gardening.
"I did weekly one-on-one tutoring with one student who was getting an 'F' in
my class. When she got an 'A' on the final test, I don't know who was more thrilled,
her or me! ÖWell, probably her." |

for Meredith Corporation, Goettsch worked for Younkers as a retail copywriter and
for the West Des Moines Community School District as a public relations specialist.
Education: Iowa Wesleyan College; Burlington Junior College; associate's degree
from Grand View College; B.A. from Drake University.
Professional Associations/Notable Achievements: Public Relations Society of
America and Arthur W. Page Society; accredited in school public relations and public
relations, and 2002 Alumni Achievement Award winner.
Off-the-Job Interests: Gardening, family, traveling and church.
"Right before I left the work world, I suddenly realized that I would no longer
have a business card. I stewed about it just long enough to realize that my new job
title would have to be 'Human Being Being Human.' I simply seek to enjoy daily life
and make a positive difference in other people's lives, as well." |
