A Note
From Interim Dean John Lytle

THow quickly time flies when you're engaged with good people in meaningful projects. When Dean Janet Keefer decided last spring to return to faculty, little did this broadcast-type imagine he'd be spending the year as interim dean. (No, it's not like herding cats, and I do enjoy an office with windows after 24 years in Meredith's basement.)

The experience has been humbling, occasionally terrifying and certainly inspiring, as our SJMC staff and faculty work hard during turbulent times to prepare excellent graduates for the mass communication workplace.

You'll read elsewhere about our two visiting professors, Carol Bodensteiner and Angela Renkoski, who offer years of professional public relations and magazine experience. Carol is bridging the one year phased retirement of Dr. Henry Milam, while Angela is filling in for professor Patricia Prijatel, who enjoys sabbatical in Slovenia. A search for Dr. Milam's replacement is underway. Associate Professor Ronda Menke is coordinating that search. We're pleased to announce we've completed the search for a new dean. See the news on page 4.

Two years of program and administrative reviews have set the agenda for a five-year strategic plan that's bound to affect all units. We've also undertaken plenty of more routine projects.

The big news from downstairs is that KDCS ("Drake's Campus Sound") is live streaming to the Internet. You can link to the radio station through our home page www.drake.edu/journalism. We've applied for a construction permit to build a low power FM radio station. The FCC is backed up by a huge number of applications. Drake filed one of about 15 applications for one available frequency in Des Moines.

Thanks to SJMC's five-year Meredith Corporation grant, magazine students are busy producing this year's issue of their award-winning 515. Ad majors are working for the Principal Financial Bank on their campaigns class. PR majors are devising strategies for their campaign client, Iowa Public Television.

This year's enrollment is steady, students remain excited about their internships and placement is strong. Drake SJMC is doing well.

Come see us when you're in the neighborhood.
