Women's basketball
In yet another phenomenal season for the Bulldogs, the women's basketball team finished the year with a 25-8 record, winning 11 straight games and 13 of its last 15 contests to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Syracuse and Baylor Universities. Drake was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by the University of South Carolina.

The Bulldogs were ranked 20th in the final USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, which was the highest end-of-season ranking for Drake in 20 years. In 1982, the Bulldogs were ranked 16th in the Associated Press poll.

"I am very excited to be ranked in the top 20," said Women's Head Basketball Coach Lisa Stone. "It's a credit to our team. I am very proud of our players."

Led by standouts Carla Bennett, Jayme Anderson and Stephanie Schmitz, the Bulldogs could do no wrong this season. Junior center Bennett was selected to the inaugural Mid-Major All-American Women's Basketball Team by Full Court Press after leading the Bulldogs with 16.2 points and 7.6 rebounds this season. She was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference first team for the third straight year after leading the league in field goal percentage (.578) and blocked shots (64). Bennett was also named to the MVC All-Defensive Team and the MVC All-Tournament Team, as well as being named defensive specialist by the Bulldogs.

Senior Jayme Anderson was selected by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as an All-American Athlete for 2002. Anderson averaged 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She was also named MVC Newcomer of the Year after transferring from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this year. Anderson also earned the team's Best Rebounder Award. The 2002 All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes are recognized for their athletic accomplishments, academic and personal achievements, community involvement and leadership qualities.

Last but definitely not least, senior Schmitz was named MVP of the women's basketball team. Schmitz accepted her award at the squad's annual postseason banquet in mid-April after returning from a 2002 WNBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago. The camp offers WNBA coaches and general managers the opportunity to evaluate the skills of prospective players in advance of the WNBA draft.

"It is a tremendous honor for Stephanie Schmitz to be invited to the WNBA Combine," said coach Stone. "She has had an outstanding collegiate career and is looking forward to extending it further."

Schmitz was instrumental in the Bulldogs' run to the NCAA's Sweet 16 this past season. The 5'8" guard averaged 14.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and two steals in the NCAA Tournament.

In regular season play, Schmitz led the team in assists (4.6), ranked 10th in the nation in free throw percentage (.895), was second on the squad in scoring (13.2) and received the team's hustle award. She was a first-team All-MVC selection in addition to being named to the MVC All-Tournament Team.

Senior Erin Richards was awarded the three-point shooting award at the postseason banquet after leading the MVC by shooting 42.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc, good enough to rank 17th in the NCAA. Richards also was an honorable mention All-MVC selection.

Men's basketball
Drake's men's basketball team posted a 14-15 overall record, including a 9-9 fifth-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. "Our goals for the upcoming year have to be higher than last season," said Men's Basketball Coach Kurt Kanaskie. "We have a veteran team coming back but we will also still have a young team."

At the annual postseason banquet held in April, sophomore guard Luke McDonald received the Coaches Award based on his unselfish attitude, reliability, academic success and dedication to the team. McDonald, who became the first sophomore to lead the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring since 1999, averaged 17.9 points and 3.1 rebounds, while shooting 46 percent from the floor. The 6'6" native of Lubbock, TX, also led the league in three-point baskets with a school-record 91.
