DRAKE ANNOUNCES
POLICIES FOR STREET PAINTING 2003
The policies governing
this year's street painting event at Drake University were developed following
a series of conversations with Drake students, faculty and administration, and
two members of the Des Moines Police Department.
"Street painting
is a wonderful tradition at Drake that kicks off a week of activities on campus
and in the community leading up to the Drake Relays," said Drake President
David Maxwell. "Our goal, from the start, has been to ensure safety, and
ensure that students' behavior at the event is respectful of one another, and
consistent with the laws of the State of Iowa."
The policies for
street painting, which include a ban on bringing beverage containers into the
event, have been approved by the Student Senate.
"The adoption
of a no-container policy should have no real effect on the spirit of street painting
or the character of the event," said Student Body President Thomas Laehn.
"Free non-alcoholic drinks will be provided for those in attendance, so there
will be no need for people to bring their own."
Street painting
will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, along Carpenter Avenue
between 27th Street and 28th Street. Student organizations will be painting squares
to show their interpretation of this year's Relays theme- "Speed of Life."
In addition to street painting, there will be the following additional activities:
- A brunch in Crossroads,
Hubbell Dining Hall, 9:30 to 11 a.m.
- Free food and
beverages near the Olmsted parking lot, beginning at 11 a.m.
- A DJ north of
Morehouse Hall
- Free beverages
near the painted street
- Open recreation
on Helmick Commons
- A photo contest
in which 200 disposable cameras will be given away
News media attending
street painting should check in with Lisa Lacher or Erin Downs at the Olmsted
Center parking lot at 29th Street and University Avenue.
