EXPERT
TO DISCUSS THE CHANGING WORLD OF NATIVES IN THE ECUADORIAN ANDES
A University
of Iowa professor who has researched the changing social world of native
people in the Ecuadorian Andes will speak at Drake University on Tuesday,
Feb. 5.
Rudi Colloredo-Mansfeld,
who teaches anthropology at the University of Iowa, will discuss Indigenous
Autonomy in a Globalizing Economy: The Case of Ecuador. His speech,
which is free and open to the public, will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Honors
Lounge of Medbury Hall, 1317 28th St.
Colloredo-Mansfeld
will focus on the connections between market competition and expressive
culture in the formation of native Quichua communities. He has written
extensively on indigenous arts, globalization and the international craft
economy. His recent book, The Native Leisure Class: Consumption
and Cultural Creativity in the Andes, was published by the University
of Chicago Press.
