DRAKE
UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT 'ROMEO AND JULIET'
Drake University
Theatre will present "Romeo and Juliet," William Shakespeare's
classic story of love and loss, at 8 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 17 and at 2
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center,
25th Street and Carpenter Avenue.
"Romeo
and Juliet" is probably the best known love story in the world. In
addition to being performed on world stages, in many different languages,
it has been composed symphonically, performed as an opera and ballet,
and filmed in many different guises.
Drake's production
emphasizes the youth of the two lovers, which makes the story doubly poignant,
Juliet being not yet 14 and Romeo still a teenager.
"The
first half of the play is a romantic comedy which turns swiftly to vengeance,
desperation and an inexorable tragedy," says Director Clive Elliott,
Drake's Daniel B. Goldberg artist in residence. "The young people
are surrounded by a world of violence that leads to their ultimate demise,
something today's youth can identify with."
The Friends
of Drake Arts and St. Catherine of Siena Parish will host a TalkAbout
prior to the performance on Friday, Nov. 16. The event will take place
at the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Student Center, 28th Street and
Brattleboro Ave.
The TalkAbout
will begin with a light Italian supper at 6 p.m. followed by Elliott's
presentation on the "Star-Crossed Lovers." His talk will explore
why the 16th century tale of love, passion, violent revenge and tragic
death is still relevant in the 21st century. Elliott will also discuss
Drake's production as well as the historical background and contemporary
influences on the way the play is regarded.
The cost
of the TalkAbout and Nov. 16 performance is $14 per person. Reservations
are required. For reservations, call 271-4747. The cost of the play only
is $4 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens and free with a
Drake ID. Call the Drake Fine Arts Box Office at 271-3841 for tickets
and more information.
