FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 7, 1999 CONTACT: Lisa Lacher, (515) 271-3119 BRANDENBURG ENSEMBLE TO PRESENT MUSIC OF FOUR CENTURIES ON OCT. 16 The Des Moines Brandenburg Ensemble, John Canarina conducting, will present its annual fall concert on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Drake University. The performance will start at 8 p.m. on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 26th Street and University Avenue. For this, the ensemble's 13th annual performance, a program containing music of four centuries will be presented. The featured soloist will Des Moines Symphony Concertmaster Jonathan Sturm, who will be heard in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, representing the 18th century. From the 17th century will be heard a suite from the opera "Abdelazar, or the Moor's Revenge" by English composer Henry Purcell. The 19th century will be represented by the Serenade No. 2 in A major by Brahms, a work with a unique sonority in that the orchestration does not include violins, but violas, cellos, basses and wind instruments. Igor Stravinsky will represent the 20th century with his "Dumbarton Oaks" Concerto, a work which the composer admits was somewhat patterned after the Brandenburg Concertos of Bach.
