April Message to Parents

Images of Students at Street Painting 2015The Drake Relays is one of the nation’s premiere track and field events that takes place right here on Drake’s campus every year. This event attracts more than 40,000 spectators, 200 college and university teams as well as world-class athletes. Drake students are at the forefront of the excitement, whether they’re seated in the stands, competing in Relays events, or helping to produce the largest student-run television broadcast in the nation. However, Relays is so much more than a track meet to Drake students. Campus and the surrounding community really come to life during this week with community traditions such as Downtown Street Painting, alumni reunions; indoor pole-vaulting event and a mile run through downtown Des Moines. The events put on by the Student Activities Board this year include:

  • Friday, April 21st - Street Painting
  • Saturday, April 22nd - Habitat for Humanity Build
  • Sunday, April 23rd - Pancake Breakfast
  • Monday April 24th - Relays Carnival and Redbull Chariot Race
  • Tuesday, April 25th - Book Bash
  • Tuesday, April 25th – Grand Blue Mile through Downtown
  • Wednesday, April 26th - Pole Vault at Capital Square
  • Wednesday, April 26th - Zuzu Acrobats
  • Friday, April 28th - Relays Concert
  • Friday, April 28th – Saturday, April 29th – Drake Relays Meet

On another exciting note, Drake University hired Blake Boldon as the 12th Franklin ‘Pitch’ Johnson Director of the Drake Relays this year. Boldon, a native of Osceola, Iowa, previously served as the executive director of the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and has an extensive background and record of success as a competitive athlete, collegiate coach, and event director.

In his previous role, Boldon has transformed the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon (IMM) and its associated races within the Beyond Monumental organization into one of the premier road racing events in the nation over the last four years. Overseeing a budget of nearly $2 million, Boldon has propelled the event from the 60th largest marathon in the country to the 20th. That growth rate was the third largest nationally for a marathon and the largest for a half marathon. His leadership has resulted in the IMM setting annual revenue records and a 100 percent growth in sponsorships while also making the IMM an agent of change in the Indianapolis community. In addition to strengthening the existing lineup of events, Boldon created the Monumental Mile in 2014 that was ranked by Shape Magazine as one of the top 10 1-mile road races in the nation alongside with Des Moines’ Grand Blue Mile.

We are excited to have Blake Boldon on board and for another exciting Drake Relays!
