Air Assault
In July of 2011 Cadet Jeremy Hild graduated from Air Assault School and can now proudly wear the prestigious Air Assault Badge. Air Assault School qualifies soldiers to conduct airmobile and air assault helicopter operations, to include aircraft orientation, slingload operations, proper rappelling techniques and fast-rope techniques. The school itself is 10 training days and requires a 12-mile (19 km) ruck march in three hours or less in order to graduate. Drake CDT Ben Kertzman is also an Air Assault graduate.
CULP:Trip to Senegal
In order to commission culturally competent leaders, US Army Cadet Command sends select ROTC cadets to various countries around the world to immerse them into the local culture and develop them as leaders. The program CULP stands for cultural understanding and language proficiency and has been offered to cadets as a summer internship for the past few years. Drake Army ROTC Cadet Curtis Nielsen was selected for this program and in May 2011 he traveled to Senegal, Africa for 21 days.
The main mission of the Senegal deployment was to teach the Senegalese military officers English so that they could speak enough English to attend US Army schools in the future. While in Senegal, CDT Nielsen was assigned two Senegalese officers to teach named Major Dioff, and Lieutenant Ndior. CDT Nielsen feels that both of them greatly improved their English reading and writing abilities because of this program. While in Senegal, CDT Nielsen also got the chance to be a tourist and immerse himself in the local culture and customs. He believes that his trip to Senegal was truly a life changing and once in a lifetime experience. Drake Cadets Ben Kertzman and Brooks Lambert have also been on CULP trips to Peru and Europe in past years.

Buddy Ranger Challenge
On April 2nd 2011, CDT Curtis Nielsen, CDT Jeremy Hild, and twelve other cadets from Iowa State University and Buena Vista University competed against 110 other cadet teams at the annual Buddy Ranger Challenge competition at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
The competition started before 0600 with a 10 KM ruckrun and ended twelve hours later with another 10KM run. In between were events designed to test the cadets warrior skills including a grenade assault course, an obstacle course aptly named the Crucible, knots, and weapons assembly and disassembly. Each event was timed with penalties for errors.
The team of CDT Nielsen and CDT Hild did not do as well as they would have liked, but they did take first place overall in hand grenade assault course event. CDT Nielsen and CDT Hild both agree that the even was a great experience and will pay dividends in the future.

Veterans Day
On November 11th, in honor of Veteran's Day, members of the Drake Army ROTC detachment presented the national and state colors at Ramsey Village, located just north of campus. Members included CPT Chad Cook, CDT David Corn, CDT Benjamin Kertzman, CDT Brooks Lambert, CDT Rachael Stern, and CDT Matthew Jones.
Ranger Challenge
Select members of Drake University’s Army ROTC program competed in the 2010 11th Brigade Ranger Challenge competition on October 16th and 17th at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Ranger Challenge is the "varsity sport" of Army ROTC. Focusing on basic infantry skills, squad-sized teams compete against other schools in the region on their abilities in rifle marksmanship, constructing a rope-bridge, patrolling, assembly and disassembly of the M16A2 rifle, the Army Physical Fitness Test, land navigation, hand grenade assault course, and a 10 kilometer team ruck run. Drake Army ROTC finished 11th overall, competing against 16 other teams from Big 10 and Big 12 schools. Team members included Brooks Lambert, Josh Moon, Ben Kertzman, Matthew Speers, Rachael Stern, Curtis Nielsen, Matthew Jones, Jeremy Hild, and Austin Moore.

Mountain Warfare
In August 2010 Cadet Jeremy Hild successfully graduated from Mountain Warfare school. Army Mountain Warfare School (AMWS) is a school located at the Ethan Allen Firing Range, Jericho, Vermont to train soldiers in the specialized skills required for operating in mountainous terrain.
