SJMC internship coordinator Carlyn Crowe has been honored with the university’s annual Madelyn M. Levitt Distinguished Community Service Award. The award honors a Drake faculty member or employee who demonstrates a personal commitment to volunteerism and community service through an outstanding record of involvement in community projects contributing to the quality of life in our region; and professional and personal values that typify the ideals of “giving back to others.”
In addition, several Drake faculty have been honored as outstanding teachers and mentors. Kelly Bruhn has been nominated for Levitt Teacher of the Year. Todd Evans, Jennifer Glover Konfrst and Sandy Henry have been nominated as Levitt Mentor of the Year. The Levitt award winners will be announced at commencement on Sunday, May 20.
The Des Moines Area Religious Council, which has partnered with Drake classes on its food pantry and other initiatives, last week received a Community Partnership Award from Iowa Campus Compact. This competitive awards honors a campus-community partnership or collaboration that is deep, reciprocal and transformational. DMARC was nominated by SJMC internship coordinator Carlyn Crowe, who has worked with the organization in her First Year Seminar and other classes.
The Drake board of trustees recently approved the promotions of two SJMC faculty members. Advertising teacher Sandy Henry earned promotion to full professor and magazine instructor Jeff Inman was promoted to associate professor.
Six SJMC classes are being offered online this summer. Five of them will fulfill Drake University AOI requirements. The classes being offered are:

Drake finals week this year coincides with the Iowa state high school track meet, Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19, at Drake stadium. Parking will be scarce around campus. This means that if you have final exams on Thursday or Friday, allow extra time to find parking, or plan for alternative transportation.
