Bachelor of Science in Education: Elementary Education
The Bachelor of Science in Education: Elementary Education prepares students for initial teacher certification at the elementary level. Graduates of the program will be learning leaders, student advocates, and reflective practitioners.
Program Requirements
To earn a bachelor's degree from Drake, students majoring education need to fulfill the requirements of the Drake general curriculum, the requirements of the School of Education curriculum, and complete at least one full endorsement.
The SOE curriculum requires students in the first two years of undergraduate work to take a number of introductory-level, pre-professional courses to acquaint themselves with the field of education. These classes must be taken in order to pursue a major in either elementary or secondary education and to be admitted into Teacher Education.
During the third and fourth years, students are expected to take the professional strand of classes known as methods classes. The number of methods classes required varies according to whether the student intends to major in elementary or secondary education. The student will also complete a professional student teaching semester during his or her senior year.
Endorsement Options
An endorsement is an area of specialization. There are many endorsements available at the elementary level. While only one endorsement is required to get a teaching license, two or more endorsements are recommended for maximizing students' flexibility and variety in their professional careers.
