Scheduled Programs
  • New! Live Healthy Iowa - Do you have plans of "Lightening Up" for 2012 or getting more activity in?  If so, join the Drake group and form a team of 2 - 10 people.  For 100 days, January 23 - May 1 you will be part of a friendly competition among other fellow colleagues and Iowans.  This program costs $20.  With this fee you will receive the following: training t-shirt, weekly motivational emails, personal tracking page, unlimited access to recipes, workouts and health information, chance to win prizes and a 1-year magazine subscription.  You can sign up any time, even after the challenge begins.  For more information contact Jana Peterson.
  • S.H.A.P.E. Program – Supporting Healthy Activity & Promoting Exercise –This program will help you monitor and log your activity.  S.H.A.P.E. allows you to receive rewards for all levels of activity including cardiovascular exercise, sporting activities, wellness programs, and even household activities.  Contact the Wellness Center for more information.
  • Wellness Lunch Series - Come for a FREE lunch and the opportunity to hear local experts present on various wellness related topics.  The theme this semester is t.v shows from the past.  You must RSVP for these events to get the free lunch, email Johanna Determann to RSVP.
      • Sports Medicine...I've Heard that....
        Do you have questions regardin injuries, what types of shoes you should be wearing, or how to properly stretch?  This program, presented by Physical Therapists at Mercy hospital, will be answering your questions as well as addressing common questions and injury prevention.

      • Food Mash - Ups
        This Wellness Lunch Series will present different and tasty ways to prepare your food.  This can help you change up your routine for breakfast, lunch dinner or snacks.  You will taste the food and get recipes at this event.

      • I Want to Break Free
        Are you under stress and looking to "break free"?  The end of the semester can be stressful and this stress can impact both your health and day to day living.  This lunch series will help you recognize and reduce your stress levels.

  • Move More - Attend 20 group exercise classes at Drake and earn a t-shirt. Ten lucky winners will win other great prizes. Check out the schedule on this website or on www.drake.edu/life/recservices.  We offer 25 classes each week!
  • Healthy Bingo - Looking for a way to have fun, win prizes and stay healthy during the holidays?  If so, health bingo is the program for you!  Complete a list of healthy challenges during a certain amount of time at the conclusion of the semester, and you will have the chance to win fantastic prizes during a fun game of health bingo.  Please contact Johanna Determann for more details or to sign up! (This program will end as part of the wellness lunch series.
  • Weight Training Clinics - Interested in weight training, but don't know where to start? Then this one-on-one clinic is just for you! Clinics provide participants with basic weight training guidelines. The beginning clinic will focus on the weight machines while the advanced clinic introduces the participant to free weight exercises. Just give the Wellness Center a call to schedule your own personal Weight Training Clinic!

  • Health Screening - Receive a reduced rate on your monthly Drake insurance premiums by participating in the screening. The screening includes a health risk appraisal, blood lipid profile, blood pressure reading, body fat measurement, and a wellness consultation. For more information contact Jana Peterson.
  • Massage Therapy - Drake Wellness is offering massage therapy as a program that faculty, staff and students can participate in.  Massage therapy positively influences the overall health and well-being of clients. Massages take place in 113 Bell Center (Wellness Center).   1/2 hour and 1 hour appointments are available.  $25/half hour and $45/hour.  Hurry in, during the introduction first month hour massages will cost $40.  To sign up for a massage contact massage therapist Kevin Peterson at kevin.peterson@drake.edu.
  • Individualized Consultation - Individual consultations are available in the following areas: Fitness Testing, Exercise Prescription and Nutritional Analysis.  Email the wellness staff Jana Peterson or Johanna Determann to set up your appointment today.  Fitness testing inlcudes: weight, body composition, blood pressure, resting heart rate, sit ups and push ups. 
  • Wellness Library - Drake Wellness now has a variety of wellness-related books, relaxation audiotapes and videos available for you to check out. Stop by the Wellness Center to borrow a book on stress management, healthy relationships, weight loss, running, healthy eating cookbooks, moving through menopause, and general fitness. The Wellness Center will also deliver!

GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAMS- ALL FREE!!!

  • Fitness Yoga - The practice of yoga can develop flexibility, strength, stamina, concentration, and balance, while promoting deep relaxation.
  • Pilates - Pilates is a method of physical and mental conditioning. Total body exercises are performed to increase flexibility, strength, balance, posture and stamina. Building strength in the "power house" (abdomen, low back and buttocks) is the focus. Pilates concentrates on fewer repetitions and precise movements, requiring proper form.
  • Group Exercise Classes - Experience all the benefits of a great cardiovascular workout with fun music in a group setting. These FREE classes are taught so all fitness levels will feel welcome. Contact the Wellness Center for a schedule of classes including circuit, step, kickboxing, toning and water aerobics.  

SEASONAL EVENTS

  • Take Care Packages - Show your appreciation to your colleagues this holiday season by sending a healthy "Take Care" package provided by the Recreational Services Staff. Packages will include fruit, trail mix, and other healthy treats. They may be purchased from the Drake Wellness Center for $5.00 each.
