English as a Second Language

In order to serve Drake's commitment to international education, the Office of International Programs and Services began offering an English as a Second Language program in 1983. Offerings now include the Intensive English Program (IEP) and the Summer Institute for Language and Culture (SILC) and customized language programming.

Drake is a comprehensive IEP that supports F-1 visas.  All of our senior teachers have a masters or PhD in language teaching.  We offer Intermediate and Advanced level classes with an academic focus.  In order to be considered Intermediate, students should be able to test at a 380 or above on the TOEFL exam or 3.5 on the IELTS (The TOEFL will be taken once you arrive).

The IEP is an academic support service designed to help international students enhance their academic success by improving their English language proficiency and increasing their familiarity with US culture. Small classes and individual attention characterize Drake's IEP, where intermediate and advanced level courses are offered year-round.
