Something that is definitely not Fake news: Drake’s journalism program is one of the best in the nation.
The proof lies in our award-winning students and graduates working at major news outlets (the Washington Post, the National Journal, ESPN, and more) around the world.
Our internship coordinator will help you identify opportunities that can jump-start your career. Drake news students have found internships with The Des Moines Register, the Kansas City Star and the Philadelphia Inquirer, ESPN, the Associated Press, KCCI-TV, WHO-TV, WOI-TV, St. Louis PBS and Iowa and Minnesota NPR affiliates, the World Food Prize, Meredith Corporation, and ABC News, among others. Want to graduate with list of honors and awards? You’ve come to the right place: students in this major regularly receive honors including the Broadcast Education Association Best of Festival for multimedia award; Associated Collegiate Press, Society of Professional Journalists, and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication awards; Telly and Iowa Broadcast News Association awards; Iowa College Media Association awards; and more.
Drake news alumni have worked at WHDH-TV Boston and ABC7 Chicago; the National Journal; The Atlantic; Washington Post; Time Out Chicago; the Science Center of Iowa and the Des Moines Art Center; the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; the Denver Post; WSMV-TV and WTVF-TV in Nashville; ZLR Ignition advertising agency; the Center for Investigative Reporting; CNN; ESPN; Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau; Greater Des Moines Partnership; the staffs of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill and U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, and the communications departments of the Omaha and Des Moines public school systems.
You’ll learn to report and tell stories that serve the public good; how to gather news and information accurately, fairly, and ethically; and how to produce your stories for distribution across traditional and digital media platforms. You’ll gain a solid foundation in multimedia skills that allow you to follow your passion into radio or television, print or online, news, sports, or features. You will graduate with technology and communication skills that can take you anywhere.
Of course, you’ll benefit from the experiences that all Drake Bulldogs enjoy—mentorship from professors at the top of their field; résumé-worthy internships, research experiences, and other professional preparation; opportunities to learn while serving the community; and January Term experiences (at no additional cost) that immerse you into the fascinating topics—and locations—you choose.
