I’m interested in a Career in Medicine. Why should I major in BCMB?

M.D./D.O. Careers

A major in BCMB has the appropriate curriculum to prepare you for the MCAT. The 2015 MCAT will increase the amount of content directed at biochemistry topics and liberal arts applications. Accordingly, biochemistry and psychology have been added to the recommended course list for pre-med students along with solid footing in the liberal arts. Biochemistry majors’ MCAT scores are above the average of those taking the exam and within the standard deviation range of admitted medical school students. Over the past 10 years, nearly 34% of our alumni have successfully pursued M.D./D.O. careers.

Dentistry/Veterinary Careers

These require similar skills required for admission to medical schools but with slight differences appropriate to their particular specialty. The strategy for preparing for medical school is thus also a good strategy for admission to these schools. Over the past 10 years, 6% of our graduates have successfully pursued careers in dentistry or veterinary medicine.

Nursing/Physician Assistant Careers

Bachelor's in nursing (B.S.N.) can be pursued after completion of your BCMB degree. These programs typically build the clinical training onto your science training. You should consult specific programs but they typically require a few additional classes like nutrition and psychology. Some students then choose to pursue advanced nursing degrees (M.S.N. or nurse practitioners or doctorates). These can be highly sought after and are quite lucrative.

Physicians’ assistants are also in high demand, are well paid and build upon your bachelor’s degree. These programs also require some additional courses that include psychology and medical terminology. They also require several hours of patient contact so you should plan this into your schedules. Admission to these programs often requires GRE scores. Over the past 10 years, approximately 3% of our alumni have pursued careers in nursing and physician assistant fields.

Other Health Careers

There are a wide variety of other health careers open to BCMB graduates including optometrists, podiatrists, physical therapists, and chiropractors. Each has very similar basic science requirements with some additional special requirements. Over the past 10 years, about 6% of our BCMB alumni have successfully pursued these careers.
