Bulldog Recovery Support Group

Group Objectives:
  • Understand the Disease Model of Addiction: Explore addiction as a complex health issue.
  • Recognize Warning Signs: Learn how to identify signs of addiction in yourself and others.
  • Relapse Prevention: Gain strategies to maintain recovery and avoid relapse.
  • Reduce Stigma: Foster an environment of acceptance and support for those affected by addiction.
  • Create a Healthier College Experience: Discover alternatives to alcohol and substance use that enhance your college life

When: Biweekly on Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 pm, Meredith 102, starting October 8th

Monthly Pet Therapy

Therapy dogs can help improve calmness, mood, and overall wellness, especially when experiencing stressed. Many students feel disconnected from their pets when returning to campus or separating from them in any capacity. We encourage you to join the Drake Counseling Center and Dog Trainer Elite to connect with available therapy dogs.

  • When: Sundays
    • February 16th: 2-3pm
    • March 2nd: 2-4pm
    • April 6th: 2-3pm

Workshops/Presentations

Developing Self-Awareness Workshop Series

The goal of the Self-Awareness Workshop Series is for participants to develop insight into the variables that make-up and impact their internal word; how the external world interacts with that internal world; and the formation and consequence of self and identity.

Benefits of Attending:

  • Improved Insight into your inner world
  • Better understanding of your emotions
  • Develop skills to respond to stressors in the external world
  • Stronger sense of identity and self-concept.

Mental Health 101 Series

Are you interested in learning more about depression, anxiety, and focus and concentration? Then we invite you to join the Broadlawns Drake Student Counseling Center to explore these topics further and learn strategies to support yourself or someone that you care about who may be experiencing mental health concerns. 

When (all workshops held from 1-2pm in the Pomerantz Conf. Room in Olmsted): :

QPR Training: Suicide Prevention

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

Black Mental Health Week

During the second week of Black History Month, the Broadlawns Drake Student Counseling Center uplifts Black Mental Health through raising awareness of the unique experiences of Black Americans and how this can impact their mental health. Join us on social media throughout the week and February 14th to celebrate!

When: February 10 through 14th

Where: Drake Student Counseling Center (Facebook Page) and @Drakestucounseling (Instagram page); February 14th from 2-3pm in Olmsted Breezeway

Eating Disorder Awareness Week

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week occurs from February 24th through March 2nd. The Broadlawns Drake Student Counseling Center recognizes the prevalence of eating disorders and importance of having resources for support. We are partnering with Edison Mental Health Clinic to offer free eating disorder assessments and a mental health workshop for Drake students. 

Assessments: February 26th from 9-10:30am (for student athletes only) and February 28th from 12:30-2:30pm in the Olmsted Drake Room. Register here.

Poetry/Writing Workshop

The Broadlawns Drake Student Counseling Center, NAMI on Campus, and NAMI Iowa are partnering to host a writers workshop focused on sharing stories of healing. You do not need to be a professional writer or poet to attend and all levels of writing poetry or story telling are invited to attend. Register here.

When: February 26th, 5-7pm

Break n' Paint

Art therapy is a powerful tool for relaxation and creativity! Join the Broadlawns Drake Student Counseling Center in a guided art therapy activity focused on unwinding and getting creative. 

When: March 30th, 3-4pm

Midterms and Finals De-stress Events

In collaboration with Student Senate, Broadlawns Drake Counseling Center, and NAMI On Campus

Join us for an opportunity to relax, cope, and enjoy therapy dogs in preparation for Midterms and Finals. Free food and mental health crisis kits will be available for all students in attendance. In addition, students will receive free mental health items and have the opportunity to engage in play therapy!
