Hazardous Materials Shipping

A hazardous material can be generated from various activities on campus such as research. Hazardous materials have the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment. At times, there is a need to ship these hazardous materials elsewhere. If transported improperly, these materials can pose serious threats to human and environmental health.

The shipping of hazardous materials is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and/or international agencies such as the International Air Transport Agency (IATA). To ensure that proper regulations are met, these hazardous materials must be properly packaged and handled by trained employees. Failure to meet regulatory requirements may result in citations, fines, and/or imprisonment.

As such, the Environmental Health and Safety Department has provided guidelines and training for all employees handling and shipping hazardous materials to ensure proper regulatory requirements are being met.
