I was born in Los Angeles and raised in Burbank, California. I earned my B.A. at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) and my M.A. & Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. My research interests are women’s and gender studies, popular culture, young adult fiction, feminist theories, and horror films. I teach courses in literary study, reading gender, and adolescent literature. I also created a course on gender and horror film, which I teach every spring. I am currently designing a course on women and true crime.
My book, Learning Curves, examines body image and sexuality in young adult fiction. I have published articles in NWSA Journal, Rosebud, and in the anthology Stories Still to Tell. I have published three articles for The Conversation, which were republished in a variety of magazines such as Yahoo News, Salon, Quartz, The Daily Beast, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
