Susan Garneau specializes in nineteenth-century American social history and the history of crime and punishment. She earned her B.S. and M.A. in History at Northern Illinois University, and her Ph.D. at Loyola University-Chicago.
Her dissertation focuses on incarceration in nineteenth-century Chicago. She has taught courses covering the Western Civilization sequence, the U.S. history sequence, and upper-division courses in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, American Revolution, and the World Since 1945.
Originally from Illinois, she spent time living in California, Colorado, and Nebraska before coming to Iowa. She enjoys teaching and watching students engage with the past and its continuing significance today. When not teaching, she enjoys reading and spending time with her husband, daughter, and pet tortoise.
